CDF Sodium Phytate (Chelating Agent)

Quantity: 60 G

CDF Sodium Phytate

Natural Chelating Agent for Stability & Preservation Support

INCI Name: Sodium Phytate

Appearance: White to off-white powder or granules

Solubility: Water-soluble

Recommended Usage: 0.05% – 1.0%

Primary Functions: Chelating agent, formulation stabilizer, preservative support

Sodium Phytate is a naturally derived chelating agent used to bind trace metal ions such as iron, copper, and calcium that can accelerate oxidation, discoloration, and degradation in cosmetic formulations. It is commonly selected as a biodegradable alternative to EDTA in natural and clean-label systems.

Common Applications

  • Natural skincare and haircare formulations
  • Serums, creams, lotions, and emulsions
  • Micellar waters and aqueous toners
  • Preservative-minimized or “mild preserved” systems
  • Shampoos and rinse-off cleansing products

Performance & Formulation Notes

Sodium Phytate improves formulation stability by sequestering metal ions that catalyze oxidative reactions and interfere with preservative systems. While it is not an antioxidant itself, it significantly enhances the performance of antioxidants and preservatives by reducing metal-induced degradation pathways.

Key Benefits

  • Natural, biodegradable alternative to EDTA
  • Improves color, odor, and active stability
  • Enhances efficacy of preservative systems
  • Supports longer shelf life in natural formulations
  • Compatible with a wide range of cosmetic systems

Formulation Guidance

  • Use phase: Water phase
  • Typical use: 0.1% – 0.3% for most formulations
  • Processing: Add at room temperature or mild heat (<40 °C)
  • pH range: 4.0 – 8.0
  • Compatibility: Works well with surfactants, actives, and preservative systems

Sodium Phytate is particularly valuable in formulations containing botanical extracts, vitamins, or metal-sensitive actives where oxidative stability and color retention are critical.
