  • Amodimethicone

Silicone for Hair Conditioning & Frizz Protection

    INCI Name: Amodimethicone

Appearance: Clear to slightly hazy viscous fluid

Solubility: Dispersible in certain lightweight oils and silicones. Requires emulsification for water-based formulas.

    Usage Rate: 1% – 5%

Function: Hair conditioning agent, frizz controller, color protector, heat shield

This is non-emulsified Amodimethicone. It offers highly effective conditioning, selective deposition on damaged hair fibers, and long-lasting frizz control. Ideal for use in both rinse-off and leave-in hair care products when properly emulsified or dispersed.

    Commonly Used In:

    • Shampoos and conditioners
    • Leave-in creams and sprays
    • Frizz-control serums and balms
    • Color-protect formulas
    • Heat-protect styling products

Looking for a water-dispersible option? See our Amodimethicone (Water-Dispersible Emulsion), supplied as a ready-to-use water microemulsion for direct addition to aqueous formulas.

  • Why Choose Amodimethicone?

Amodimethicone is a smart silicone polymer that bonds preferentially to damaged or porous hair, improving smoothness and shine without weighing the hair down. Its selective deposition makes it especially valuable for color-treated, dry, or frizz-prone hair.

    Key Benefits:

    • Reduces frizz and enhances manageability
    • Seals the cuticle to help retain hair color
    • Provides heat protection during styling
    • Improves shine, softness, and detangling
    • Does not build up on healthy hair strands

    Performance Highlights:

    • Selective conditioning with minimal residue
    • Effective in rinse-off or leave-in formulas
    • Ideal for color-treated, damaged, or dry hair types

    Formulation Tips:

    In Emulsions (Water-Based Formulas):

    • Amodimethicone is not water-soluble and must be emulsified using a compatible emulsifier system.
    • Use a cationic emulsifier such as BTMS-50 or BTMS-25 for optimal compatibility and stability.
    • Incorporate into the oil phase and emulsify during the main high-shear emulsification step.
    • Recommended pH range: 4.0 – 6.0 for effective hair bonding and performance.
    • Do not add directly to the water phase unless pre-emulsified.

    In Oil-Based or Anhydrous Systems:

    • Amodimethicone does not dissolve in traditional plant oils, but it is dispersible in select lightweight or volatile solvents such as:
      • Cyclopentasiloxane
      • Isoamyl Laurate
      • Isododecane
      • C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate
    • Use gentle heating (≤50°C) and thorough mixing to ensure even dispersion.
    • Stability testing is recommended for long-term shelf life in anhydrous systems.
    • Ideal for hair serums, styling oils, and leave-in treatments where water is not present.
