  • Disodium EDTA

    Chelating Agent for Cosmetic Stability

    INCI Name: Disodium EDTA

Appearance: White, crystalline powder or granular form.

    Solubility: Water-soluble.

Function: Chelating agent, enhances product stability, and boosts preservative efficacy.

  • Why Use Disodium EDTA?

Disodium EDTA is a widely used ingredient in cosmetics and personal care products due to its ability to bind metal ions, preventing formulation degradation and improving product performance.

    Key Benefits:

    • Enhances preservative efficacy by reducing metal ion interference.
    • Prevents discoloration and oxidation in formulations.
    • Improves the stability of emulsions and aqueous-based products.
    • Boosts foam performance in cleansing products.
    • Helps maintain the clarity of transparent formulations.

    Common Cosmetic Applications:

    • Shampoos and conditioners.
    • Lotions and creams.
    • Facial cleansers and body washes.
    • Makeup and skincare formulations.
    • Serums and toners.

    How to Use

While Disodium EDTA dissolves in water, complete dissolution may take 15-30 minutes or longer depending on concentration. However, it remains effective at typical usage levels (0.2%) for preservative enhancement even before fully dissolving. Any undissolved particles won't cause noticeable texture issues in creams or lotions. For transparent formulations like gels, serums, or surfactant systems, Tetrasodium EDTA is preferable due to its superior water solubility. When used in small quantities, it generally won't significantly raise pH, though citric acid solution can be used to reduce pH if necessary.

Disodium EDTA is easy to incorporate into various cosmetic and personal care formulations:

    • Dissolve in water phase before emulsification.
    • Use alongside preservatives to enhance antimicrobial efficacy.
    • Prevent formulation instability caused by metal ion contamination.

    Usage Guidelines:

    • Recommended usage levels: 0.05%–0.2%, depending on formulation needs.
    • Compatible with most cosmetic ingredients.
