INCI Name: Behentrimonium Methosulfate (and) Cetyl Alcohol (and) Stearyl Alcohol
Composition: 50% Behentrimonium Methosulfate, 35% Cetyl Alcohol, 15% Stearyl Alcohol
Appearance: White to off-white waxy pellets
Solubility: Dispersible in water; oil-phase emulsifier
Usage Rate: 1–10%
BTMS-50 is a concentrated cationic emulsifier and hair conditioning agent that delivers superior detangling, conditioning, and softening compared to lower-active blends such as BTMS-25. Its higher behentrimonium content makes it particularly effective for demanding hair care products, from intensive rinse-off conditioners to leave-in treatments. The combination of fatty alcohols (cetyl and stearyl) provides added stability and a luxurious, creamy texture in formulations.
BTMS-50 should be melted into the oil phase and emulsified into water at 70–75°C. Recommended usage is 1–3% for leave-in products, 3–6% for rinse-off conditioners, and up to 10% for intensive hair masks. Due to its stronger activity, BTMS-50 is often used at slightly lower levels compared to BTMS-25 to achieve similar conditioning performance.
Q1. Why is your BTMS-50 blend better?
Not all products sold as “BTMS-50” are created equal. Some versions are diluted or use alternative carriers that change performance. Our BTMS-50 is a full-strength blend made with 50% Behentrimonium Methosulfate and the correct ratio of Cetyl and Stearyl Alcohols. This composition provides:
Q2. What is BTMS-50, and how does it work?
BTMS-50 is a conditioning emulsifier containing 50% active Behentrimonium Methosulfate blended with fatty alcohols. The cationic (positively charged) portion binds to hair and skin, smoothing cuticles, reducing static, and creating a soft, silky finish.
Q3. How does BTMS-50 compare to BTMS-25?
BTMS-50: Stronger conditioning, denser emulsions, ideal for masks and rinse-off conditioners.
BTMS-25: Lighter conditioning, creamier feel, often preferred in leave-ins or lighter creams.
Q4. What are typical usage rates for BTMS-50?
Higher percentages deliver more conditioning but may weigh down fine hair.
Q5. Why did my BTMS-50 emulsion split?
Common causes include:
Pairing BTMS-50 with fatty alcohols, waxes, or rheology modifiers (like Carbomer 940) usually prevents splitting.
Q6. Can BTMS-50 be used in skincare?
Yes. In creams and lotions, it works as both emulsifier and conditioner, leaving skin silky with a powdery after-feel. It’s popular in body butters, hand creams, and beard balms for its velvety glide.
Q7. Is BTMS-50 considered “natural” or eco-friendly?
It’s derived from rapeseed oil, but as a quaternary ammonium compound, it may not meet strict “all-natural” standards. However, it is biodegradable, mild, and widely accepted in “eco-inspired” and vegan formulations.
Q8. Does BTMS-50 cause buildup on hair?
Less than older quats like cetrimonium chloride, but heavy use can leave fine hair feeling coated. Lower percentages or pairing with lightweight esters keeps results smooth without heaviness.
Q9. Where is BTMS-50 most effective?
Q10. Can BTMS-50 be blended with other emulsifiers?
Yes. Many formulators combine it with nonionic emulsifiers or stabilizers for texture control. Blends with cetyl alcohol, glyceryl stearate, or fatty esters create highly stable emulsions with tailored feel.
