Papain is a protease enzyme that helps break down protein-based debris on the surface of the skin, supporting a smoother, more refined feel. It is commonly used in rinse-off masks, powders, and enzyme-cleansing systems where gentle resurfacing is desired.

What It Does

Papain supports enzymatic exfoliation by helping loosen and break down surface protein buildup. It is frequently used to improve smoothness and refine the look of texture without relying solely on abrasive scrubs or high-acid systems.

Typical Use Levels

• 0.1 – 0.5% — Gentle enzymatic support
• 0.5 – 1.0% — Standard enzyme mask/cleanser level
• 1 – 2% — High-impact rinse-off systems (evaluate irritation and activity)

How to Incorporate

• Add during cool-down at ≤40°C to avoid enzyme deactivation.
• Pre-disperse in a small amount of water/glycerin for smoother incorporation.
• Mix gently and avoid excessive shear once hydrated.

Formulation Notes

• Heat sensitive: high temperatures can reduce activity.
• pH sensitive: commonly performs best in mildly acidic to near-neutral ranges (often ~pH 5–7 depending on grade).
• Preservatives/surfactants: some systems may reduce activity. Always run stability and activity checks.
• Best suited to rinse-off products and enzyme powders where performance is maximized on application.
