INCI Name: Sodium Hyaluronate
Appearance: White, fine powder
Molecular Weight: 10,000 – 95,000 Da (Low Molecular Weight)
Solubility: Water-soluble
Usage Rate: 0.5% – 2%
Function: Hydration, skin plumping, barrier support, anti-aging
Low Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid (LMW HA) penetrates deeper into the skin compared to higher molecular forms, delivering intense hydration, reducing fine lines, and boosting firmness from within. It is ideal for deep-moisture formulations aimed at visibly plumper, more youthful skin.
Unlike high molecular weight HA, which hydrates the skin surface, LMW HA penetrates deeper layers of the skin to hydrate from within. It enhances elasticity, visibly reduces wrinkle depth, and helps fortify the skin barrier against moisture loss. Its small size allows for fast absorption, making it ideal for high-performance skincare.

Traditional high-molecular HA sits on the skin’s surface and hydrates by forming a water-binding film. Low Molecular Weight HA penetrates deeper into the epidermis, improving internal hydration, elasticity, and skin plumpness from within.
High molecular weight (HMW): forms a surface film, immediate hydration, reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
Low molecular weight (LMW): penetrates deeper, supports natural HA production, and improves elasticity.
Ultra-low molecular weight: can go even deeper but may risk irritation in sensitive skin.
Yes. It can support expression of factors linked to collagen and HA synthesis over time, helping maintain firmness and reduce fine lines beyond temporary hydration.
Yes. It can hydrate the scalp better than HMW HA, soothing dryness and supporting a healthier environment around follicles. It also helps hair strands retain flexibility.
No. HA attracts water but does not prevent water loss by itself. Pair with occlusives or barrier-strengthening agents like ceramides or oils to lock in hydration.
Stickiness often comes from high levels of high-molecular-weight HA sitting on the surface. Balancing with LMW HA delivers hydration without the tacky finish.
In very dry air, humectants can pull water from deeper skin layers. Layer HA with moisturizers that include occlusives or emollients to prevent tightness.
Very small fragments (below ~10 kDa) may be reactive for some. Cosmetic-grade LMW HA typically avoids this range, but patch testing is still wise for sensitive users.
Pilling can occur when HA gels meet heavy oils or silicones. Using balanced polymers or lighter layers helps create a smoother film.
That “tight film” feel usually means too much HMW HA. Including LMW HA reduces the film effect and improves comfort while keeping hydration high.
