Ethyl Ascorbic Acid

High-Stability Vitamin C Derivative for Brightening & Antioxidant Care

INCI Name: 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid

Appearance: White to off-white crystalline powder

Solubility: Water-soluble (also soluble in ethanol and glycols)

Usage Rate: 0.5% – 5% (up to 10% in targeted systems)

Function: Brightening support, antioxidant protection, tone-evening, collagen support

Ethyl Ascorbic Acid is a next-generation vitamin C derivative engineered for improved formulation stability and skin compatibility. It supports visible radiance, more even-looking tone, and antioxidant defense while allowing a wider, skin-friendly pH range than traditional L-Ascorbic Acid.

Why Use Ethyl Ascorbic Acid?

3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid delivers vitamin C activity with greater formulation robustness. It is less prone to rapid oxidation, performs across a broader pH window, and integrates easily into modern serums, gels, and emulsions.

Key Benefits

  • Supports brighter, more even-looking skin tone
  • Helps reduce the appearance of dark spots and discoloration
  • Provides antioxidant defense against environmental stress
  • Supports collagen-related firmness and elasticity appearance
  • More formulation-stable than L-Ascorbic Acid

Usage Guidelines

  • Typical use: 0.5% – 5%; higher levels for spot or intensive treatments
  • Recommended final pH: 4.0 – 6.0
  • Add to water phase or during cool-down (<40 °C)
  • Use deionized water and minimize metal exposure

Formulation Tips

  • Pairs well with Niacinamide, Ferulic Acid, and Vitamin E
  • Consider chelators (e.g., EDTA) and air-restrictive packaging
  • Compatible with water-based, gel, and emulsion systems

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from L-Ascorbic Acid?

Ethyl Ascorbic Acid is designed for improved stability and a broader pH range, making it easier to formulate and generally better tolerated than low-pH L-Ascorbic Acid systems.

Can it be used in the morning?

Yes. It is suitable for AM use and layers well under sunscreen as part of an antioxidant routine.

Will it oxidize or yellow?

It is less prone to oxidation than L-Ascorbic Acid, but best results are achieved with chelators, low-metal processing, and opaque or air-restrictive packaging.

Is it suitable for sensitive skin?

Generally yes. It is often better tolerated than traditional vitamin C systems. Patch testing is recommended for reactive skin.

So, so much easier to formulate with than l-ascorbic acid (obviously). This is one of the most promising vitamin C derivatives of the bunch for bioavailability and efficacy, and much gentler as the pH can be closer to neutral (versus a hydrous ascorbic acid serum, which must be a bit more acidic than is comfortable)
